The Benefits of Working From Home (and How to Get Started)

andrew-neel-308138

Remember when you used to hear about people working from home and thought that it was some kind of far-fetched dream that was just out of reach for you?

That is no longer the case.

Working From Home or “Telecommuting” is a rapidly growing trend on the career front as companies realize the value of allowing employees to work remotely.

Employers are able to save on the costs of providing a work location for their employers by limiting the need for buying or renting office space.

As more employees are able to work from home this also results in savings to the employer in the area of supplies and equipment and employee productivity.

Employees who are allowed to work from home have reported being happier and feeling more “in control” of their lives and schedules when they have a remote or flexible working arrangement.

Advances in technology have made it possible for virtually any employer to offer remote work as an option to employees by allowing the employees to connect to the office remotely via a VPN or other designated connection pathway.

Many employers are jumping on the bandwagon to offer remote work-based options such as Amazon, Apple, Dell, and many other familiar brands that we love.

What Do Telecommuters Do At Home Anyway?

Remote work options and duties vary by employer but generally require employees to perform the same tasks that they do in the office from home or a remote based location.

Employees are able to communicate with their office based counterpart via internal messaging systems. cloud-based programs such as Skype, Whatsapp and more.

43% of adults reported in 2016 that they have engaged in remote work which is a drastic increase since the Work At Home boom began.

Working from home is becoming the new normal as the benefits to both employer and employees is becoming more readily apparent.  Take a look at some of the benefits of Telecommuting for employers and employees:

Telecommuting Benefits

Based on the example above the benefits of Telecommuting are apparent on both sides of the equation as employers are able to experience happier employees and lower overhead while employees are able to enjoy a greater sense of control over their work-life balance.

Is Telecommuting Right For You?

If you’re serious about working from home there are some factors to seriously consider.

Are you self-motivated? In other words are you able to drag yourself out of bed every day and down the hall to the computer to log in and start work on your own?

Telecommuting is not for the faint of heart. It will test your resolve, your willpower and your ability to resist climbing back in bed, just because you can.

You also have to be great at keeping records, knowing where to find information and solving problems independently if your remote team members aren’t available to help you out.

If you’re self-motivated and love the idea of having a greater sense of work-life balance and control over your career then Telecommuting may just be in the cards for you.

Here are a few resources that hire or post jobs for remote workers. If you’re ready to take a dive into the Telecommuting pool, spruce up your resume and apply to one of the available opportunities from one of the links below:
